Day 5: September 19, 2024 (A Day in North Berwick)

(by Lena & Kate)

Today Ms Hänggi and Ms Ruf took us on a day trip to North Berwick. Early as the birds, at 06:45, the first people started to wake up and get ready. With pressure from Ms Ruf and Ms Hänggi, exceptionally, everyone managed to be on time today. We arrived at the train station and took the train to North Berwick. After a short walk we arrived at the beach. When Rebecca spotted the toy buckets she hurriedly filled it with sand and constructed a gorgeous sandcastle while others filled their pockets with pretty shells from the beach.
After our arrival a nice lady named Charlotte greeted us. In the first part of our program we were given a lot of information about marine life. Everyone was thrilled about discovering these creatures. In our wellies –or as some very creative ones among us-in their water shoes, we waddled to the rock pools the tide had revealed and started searching for crabs, sea stars, snails, anemones and little fish. Everybody loved turning rocks and picking up struggling crabs. Even though it was quite cold our heart warmed whenever we found said animals-no matter the size. Even the little anemones that resembled little red puddings when out of the water. The stones were sprinkled with them. After our search we released the animals back into their natural habitat since the white bucket filled with nothing except for water was but a sad hotel. We headed back to the little classroom to find out more about the seabirds and their environment.

When our bellies started to rumble, and our very own personal guide Charlotte announced lunch we went to this little sweet cafeteria of the Seabird Centre. Not only were we lucky with the weather, also the restaurant spoiled us with double the food: instead of two soups we got blessed with four.

After lunch we met again, excited for our boat tour to Bass Rock. At sea the birds seemed to suddenly appear all together and within seconds we were surrounded by huge gannets. The young grey and fluffy ones stayed on the rock, for they hadn't learned to fly quite yet. We could even spot some seals in the water. It was a lovely visit to Bass rock although a few times we could not only smell their poop but also touch it. Nevertheless, we learned that it is apparently rich in nutrients… hopefully it will save us from further colds we might get, fingers crossed.

For the last bit we had another theory lesson. The whole trip was enjoyable and after Ms Ruf had taken a picture of all of us in our rather quaint gear we headed back to the train station.
With a few well-deserved naps in between, we arrived back safe and sound in Edinburgh.
For the evening, we were free to do as we pleased. Some got their groceries while others pursued their shopping “addiction”.

The moon decided to make an appearance huge and slightly red in the sky. Well at least it looked huge… thanks to Ms Hänggi we learned that it only appears that way because it was located right above the houses and the comparison made us believe so. And yesterday, it was also because it was a "supermoon". That means the moon's position was closer to Earth than at other times.
