Day 3: September 17, 2024 (A Day full of History and Culture)
(by Lea & Vivienne)
Today we went to the National Museum of Ednburgh, and of course we went there by foot. Mostly stairs, which reminded us slightly of home - like the famous Leo stairs.
Once arrived at our destination, we learned a lot about Scottish history. We did a quiz first. Afterwards, we were given some time to stroll around the museum and look at some fun exhibitions. At the technology department we finally spotted her- see it, say it, sorted- Dolly, or rather Dolly spotted us. Our beloved friend we got to know in the biology class. We were all desperately looking forward to examining the only ever cloned mammal, in the museum.
But the part that interested us most was - the fashion exhibition, where we got to see a lot of tartan but also quite interestingly, different historic pieces - such as this one: called: the Court mantua, worn in the early 18th century. To give their figure a slight hourglass shape, women wore a corset or panniers underneath. This one belonged to Queen Charlotte. Quite difficult to walk through doors with such an expansive dress, innit?
After lunch we had a lot of free time, when some of us went exploring the city, others went thrift shopping, spending all their free time in the bookstore. Some people went back to the apartments after a few hours to get some rest or already prepared the dough for the cinnamon rolls. Unfortunately we didn’t ‘t have time to finish those yet, but at least we‘ll be able to have a delicious breakfast tomorrow.
After dinner, Ms Ruf and Ms Hänggi had a special event planned- we went to a dancing event. It was the traditional Ceilidh Dance, a type of Scottish country dance, where we learned at least ten new dances. Three men in kilts gave instructions, and around seventy other people, including us, followed the instructions (or at least we tried…) The music was loud, and everyone was sweaty just after the first, very intense few dances. Ms Hänggi was in her element. We believe she didn’t take a single break, danced with every possible person in the room and appeared just to be adorably happy. (Remark by Ms Ruf: this is what you are supposed to do when taking part in Scottish dancing??) The best part was one dance where she was swung around horizontally by some random strangers, her hair flying as well as her body. There were always people taking breaks, because you can really get out of breath by constantly hopping and turning around, forgetting the steps, bumping into other people, stepping on each other’s feet and always laughing. We were dancing late into the night. We had a truly fantastic time!
On our way back home, we noticed how someone`s phone got stolen. The police were there in seconds and we were part of this exciting incident, but don`t be scared - Ms Ruf and Ms. Hänggi, are taking care of us!
And remember, always keep left. Byee!
